How to Choose Leotards That Hold Up Through a Full Season

Anyone who has watched a dancer tug at a strap between combinations, or discovered a seam giving way six weeks into a term, understands that the decision deserves more thought than it usually gets. The market for leotards is enormous, and the differences between a garment that survives a full season of daily rehearsal and one that stretches out after a dozen washes are not always obvious on a product page. They are, however, learnable. Knowing what to look at turns a guessing game into a straightforward decision.

    Fit Comes Before Everything Else

A leotard that fits correctly disappears. The dancer stops thinking about it, and attention returns where it belongs.

The critical measurement is torso length, sometimes called girth, taken from the shoulder down through the body and back up. Dancers with long torsos routinely size up for chest and hip measurements that do not actually match them, which produces a garment that is loose in the wrong places and still pulls uncomfortably. Check whether a brand publishes torso measurements rather than only bust, waist, and hip. It is a reliable signal of how seriously the brand takes fit.

The garment should sit flat against the body with no gaping at the leg openings or the neckline. Raise the arms fully overhead and hold. If the leotard rides up sharply or the shoulders pull down, the torso length is short. If fabric bunches at the waist, it is long.

Fabric Determines How Long It Lasts

Most performance dancewear uses a blend of nylon or polyester with spandex. The spandex percentage governs recovery, meaning the fabric’s ability to return to shape after being stretched. Higher spandex content generally holds up better through repeated wear.

Weight matters as well. Lighter fabrics breathe more effectively and suit warm studios and long rehearsal blocks. Heavier fabrics offer more coverage and structure, which some dancers prefer for performance. Neither is universally better, and many dancers keep both.

Look for a fabric with a matte or lightly textured finish if the leotard will see heavy use. High-shine finishes tend to show wear patterns sooner, particularly at the hips and seat where friction is constant.

    Construction Details Worth Inspecting

Seams tell you most of what you need to know. Flatlock seams lie smooth against the skin and resist splitting under stretch far better than a standard overlock. Run a finger along the inside if you have the garment in hand. Anything that feels ridged or abrasive will be noticeable during a three-hour rehearsal.

Check whether the leg openings and neckline are finished with elastic encased in fabric rather than exposed. Encased elastic lasts longer and stays comfortable through many wash cycles.

Straps deserve attention too. Wider straps distribute pressure better and are less likely to slip. If the design includes crossing or racerback elements, confirm they sit clear of the shoulder blades so the dancer can move through the upper back without restriction.

Matching the Style to the Discipline

Classical ballet training often calls for a simpler silhouette that lets an instructor see line and alignment clearly. Contemporary, jazz, and commercial work allow considerably more range, and dancers frequently use their practice wear to develop a sense of personal style.

Studio dress codes vary widely, and some specify color, sleeve length, or neckline. Read the code before purchasing rather than after. When a code is loose or applies only to certain classes, that is where dancers have room to build a wardrobe they genuinely enjoy putting on, which is not a trivial factor in how consistently they show up prepared.

    Building a Practical Rotation

A dancer training four or more days a week needs at least three or four leotards in rotation. Wearing the same garment repeatedly without adequate recovery time between wears breaks down elastic faster than almost anything else.

A reasonable starting rotation covers a code-compliant basic, a second in a different neckline or sleeve for variety, and one reserved for performances or auditions that stays out of daily rehearsal.

    Care Habits That Extend Wear

Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle or by hand. Heat is the primary enemy of spandex, so skip the dryer entirely and lay flat to dry. Avoid fabric softener, which coats the fibers and reduces both breathability and recovery. Rinse promptly after any pool or hot tub exposure, since chlorine degrades elastic quickly.

These habits add months of usable life to every garment in the rotation.

    Shopping With Confidence

Once you know to check torso length, spandex content, seam type, and elastic finishing, the choice becomes far less overwhelming. Tiger Friday builds dancewear around exactly these considerations, with fits and styles suited to serious training and to dancers who want their practice wear to feel like their own. Explore the collection to find pieces that will carry your dancer through the full season.
